Quantifying perfusion-related energy losses during magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound

چکیده
Background/introduction The focused ultrasound power required for successful ablation of uterine fibroid tissue varies substantially between patients and within single treatments.[1,2] Fibroids with high signal intensity in pretreatment T2-weighted MR images have been shown to require increased power to achieve adequate temperature elevation for ablation;[2,4] thus, T2-weighted signal intensity has been suggested as a predictor of MRgFUS treatment response.[2,3] Physiologically, the high intensity of T2weighted MR images of uterine fibroids may represent vascularization, fluid-rich tissues, or degeneration.[4,6] By quantifying perfusion-related energy losses (Qb) during MRgFUS treatments, this study is the first step in linking perfusion-related energy losses with MR perfusion imaging. This knowledge could be used to improve biothermal modeling of MRgFUS fibroid treatments and as a potential independent predictor of treatment response and outcome.

PET and MRI-guided focused ultrasound surgery for hypoxic-tissue ablation combined with radiotherapy in solid tumors
Background: The rationale was to develop an ablation approach to destroy regions of tumor resistant to radiation and thus reduce the time required for whole tumor ablation, while improving overall tumor control after radiotherapy. Materials and Methods: The system is composed of a micro positron emission tomography (mPET), 7T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and a customized MRI-compatible foc...
متن کاملMagnetic Resonance-Guided High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (MR-HIFU) in Treatment of Symptomatic Uterine Myomas
Magnetic Resonance-guided High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (MR-HIFU) is a noninvasive technique for ablation therapy for uterine myomas, where focused ultrasound energy beam generates localized high temperature in the selected area and coagulates chosen tissue, leaving the skin and tissues in between unharmed. Magnetic resonance imaging enables accurate targeting for HIFU as well as temperatur...
متن کاملReview of magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound in the treatment of uterine fibroids
Uterine leiomyoma is the most frequently occurring solid pelvic tumor in women during the reproductive period. Magnetic resonance-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound is a promising technique for decreasing menorrhagia and dysmenorrhea in symptomatic women. The aim of this study is to review the role of Magnetic resonance-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound in the treatment of uterine ...
متن کاملNoninvasive functional neurosurgery using transcranial MR imaging-guided focused ultrasound.
UNLABELLED Transcranial magnetic resonance imaging-guided focused ultrasound (tcMRgFUS) is a novel technique to supplement the spectrum of established neurosurgical interventions. In contrast to traditional ablative procedures, tcMRgFUS is noninvasive and entirely imaging-guided with continuous temperature measurements at and around the target in real time. It has no trajectory restrictions and...
متن کاملBrain Tissue Flow Measurement using Arterial Spin Labeling with Flow Discrimination by Cumulative Readout Pulses
Background The Pennes' perfusion term in the Pennes bioheat transfer equation (BHTE) depicts the rate at which blood flow removes heat from a point and can play an important role in tissue heat dissipation. Because tissue perfusion is known to change over the course of a thermal therapy treatment [1, 2], the ability to perform multiple flow assessments to detect perfusion changes during magneti...
